Recent studies have shown that sitting in front of the computer for long amounts of time can induce premature aging. When you face a computer screen, you may find yourself squinting, frowning, or furrowing your brow. These habitual facial expressions can lead to deep lines and wrinkles in the skin.

Sitting for hours without changing your facial expression can increase your risk of getting frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, and saggy skin such as jowls. You could also develop turkey neck as a result of looking down a lot, which causes your neck muscles to slacken.

UV radiation

Older computer monitors that used CRT technology emitted small amounts of UV radiation that was thought to harm the skin after prolonged exposure. Older computer monitors are highly risky for individuals who are photosensitive, such as people with lupus or xeroderma pigmentosum. The good news is that new LCD computer screens do not present a risk for UV radiation.

Allergic reactions

Prolonged exposure to the computer screen may cause skin discoloration, rashes, blotches, and allergies. This is especially true for people with pre-existing skin problems such as sun sensitivity and rosacea.
Studies have shown that individuals with sensitive skin get “screen dermatitis” due to lengthy exposure to computer screens. The computer monitor creates an electrostatic field that attracts dust particles, which end up settling on your skin. The dust particles may cause irritation, dryness, or allergic reactions, particularly in areas with poor ventilation.

Eye damage

It is important to protect your face and your eyes when you are using the computer for a long stretch of time. While newer computer screens do not emit UV rays, they emit LED light, which has been associated with eye damage. Studies have established the connection between LED lights and an increased risk of irreparable damage to the retina.

You can protect your face and eyes from the damages of prolonged computer use by taking periodic breaks. Head outside regularly and take in the fresh air. Make sure that you have a moisturizing skin care regimen in place at home with products to counter the effects of premature wrinkles.
